Claire and Ben Jericho have had a good 16-year marriage, but now Claire wants to be more than just a housewife (as if that's not work enough!). Claire offers to help with a new start-up ministry at her church for unfortunate women, but Ben fears that Claire's taking on too much. The way Claire convinces Ben through word and deed that she's capable of handling responsibility is part of the novel's charm. There are also amusing "Mr Mom" moments where Ben's revealed to be a less than perfect housekeeper.
There's also a real-life parallel to the ministry mentioned in the novel. Dress for Success (www.dressforsuccess.org) collects business clothing which is then donated to women getting off welfare and starting out (or over again) in the workforce.
