Abigail is a young woman who had a happy life in England with her parents till her dad died. Her mother and her go to America for a new life with her sister and her husband, but Mom leaves to remarry and Abigail is stuck with a cheap brother in law and as an unappreciated nanny for her sister's growing family. Abigail decides to go west as a lady's companion. She wants more out of life than to be an underpaid slave.
