Lord Augustus lives and breathes horses. He's uninterested in women because he is too poor to support a wife. He realizes he cannot dally with a woman without causing harm to himself and her. Thus, when he meets Amaryllis Walsh, he is surprised by his interest.

Gus and Captain Edward Edgerton work for Tattersalls, London's premier horse buyer and seller. They have gone to assess a group of horses after the death of their owner. They aim to determine their value and whether to cart the best ones to London while selling the lesser horses locally. Suddenly, they find out that there is a question of ownership and must wait until the lawyers weigh in on ownership.

In the meantime, Gus takes on a job for Merton, the Marquess's secretary. They are looking for Mr. Sharp (the Marquess's steward) and the Marquess's money that was removed from his bank account.
