The bridge swung from side to side as his weight shifted. Through time, this type of construction had earned the name "swinging bridge." As he walked across, Cliff held the ropes tightly each time he grabbed a handhold, keeping a precarious balance.
When he reached the other side, Cliff began to climb down the ladder-like steps. Suddenly the booming sound of a shotgun blast startled him, and he jumped back a step. Fortunately, he caught his balance, preventing a fall into the churning water below.
There, only a few dozen yards away, was a big, burly man standing in the open doorway of the shack. His face was almost hidden by his shaggy, unkempt beard.
The man continued to point the gun at Cliff. "Ya have no call to walk on my property. Jus' turn 'round an' get back to where ya belong. Maybe I won't shoot ya if ya do."
