Shipping magnate Walter Malloy wants his daughter Hannah to marry Louis Beauchcamp, which will merge the two largest shipping companies in New Orleans. Hannah does not want to be a pawn piece in her father's plans for a dynasty. When her father hires a chaperone to guard her until the wedding, Hannah realizes she must escape the tedious life her father has planned for her.

When thinking what she wants in a husband, Hannah realizes she wants someone who will always be away, so she can pursue her own interests. She decides that she is most likely to find such a man in the western states. She escapes to Fort Smith, Arkansas and meets a half-breed bounty hunter/deputy marshal, Cale Elliot.

Cale agrees to the marriage because he needs a wife to successfully infiltrate a gang that murdered his brother. He also realizes that Hannah is woefully ill-prepared to face the rigors of frontier life, so he offers to teach her the skills she will need as an independent woman.

The main characters are very human with many admirable traits. The activities Cale and Hannah encounter and the couple's interaction are pure Carol Finch.
