It may take you awhile to get into this book - the protagonist is not exactly likeable - but once you start seeing the world through Stendhal's eyes, you want to keep reading. In his confused ambitions and constant self-esteem issues, Julien Sorel is a very modern protaganist. And, even if your knowledge of French post-Napolenonic history is limited, this Norton edition has good notes to explain the points of history that are necessary for the story to make sense.
