After a slow start with RANSOM CANYON, this series has gotten better through the succeeding books. This novel, a contemporary story, continues Jodi Thomas' winning style. There are new characters to join the recurring citizens of the author's fictional Texas region.
The theme is about a group of failing misfits who meet in an unlikely place and forge a life together. Jubilee Hamilton has just inherited the Lone Heart Ranch from her great grandfather. She's the 'other daughter' in her family and has just come to the end of her career in Washington DC. Things can't get much worse... she thinks.
Charley Collins is a father of a small child and a college dropout. His family has given up on him. He gets any part-time work that he can while caring for the most important person in his life -- five-year-old Lillie. When Jubilee offers Charley a job revitalizing her ranch, Charley is sure his luck has changed.
The third misfit is Thatcher Jones, a bright young man who is failing school because he attends so infrequently. This 'throw-away kid' happens on the Lone Heart Ranch one day and learns about being valued for who he is.
