First, I cannot comprehend how a book can tell the story of an empire without a single picture or map (with the exception of the cover). They tossed around names that they did not explain (ie: Cyprus, Egypt, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, and Turkey are sometimes considered Levant countries). It is hard to visualize history without maps showing how the empire grew and then shank.

On the positive side, the writing was clear and its tie-ins with the Bible made those connections understandable. I thought it was interesting that the Assyrians were superpowers more than once. Unfortunately, I had to go to Wikipedia multiple times to see the types of clothing they wore, their art and architecture, etc.
