Dear Members,It's that time of year again...time for us to reflect on the joys of summer as we enter into the Fall season. The leaves are starting to turn, and there is color in the hills.I like to sit back and enjoy the peace and quiet that this time of year offers, to be able to take stock of things and really think. Then I remember a good book that I have read, and want to read it again. My favorite book of all time is Tolstoy's War and Peace. To read it and understand the hardships that people went through in that era, and to try to fathom the depth of the characters in a war-torn foreign country. It comes across to me as more of a philosophical piece that really makes you think. About yourself, your loved ones, acquaintances and also those people we don't care for or want in our lives. What book has inspired you? Made you think? Click here and add your own comments to our Blog section and share your opinions, ideas and inspirations. As we head into Fall, I hope that you are finding peace and joy in the love of reading as much as I do.Happy Reading!Richard and

DEAR LIBRARIAN
Dear Librarian - Why am I suddenly having trouble logging in? Sometimes after I do get into the site, some buttons won't work. I'm using an older version of Safari on my Mac, but it's always worked in the past. Is the site broken? -- Stranded with Safari
Dear Randi,
Thanks for checking, but the site isn't broken! We're guessing that it's time for you to update your system software. Yes, it seems logical that something that has always worked should keep working forever, but...that's not how it is! The internet is constantly evolving (particularly with regard to hackers, malware and software loophole exploiters) and that means sites have to update to keep site visitors safe - and our members have to update to keep themselves and their computers safe. If you wait long enough, it'll become kind of like trying to put VHS tapes into your DVD player - some basic things just won't be compatible anymore.
There are some basic safety standards to which PaperBackSwap has to adhere in order to be considered a secure site - and the updates that are required of us can mean that we'll have to exclude visitors with some older versions of system OS and some older browsers. That's to keep you safe from system vulnerabilities like FREAK, CRIME, POODLE, RC4, BEAST and Logjam. They have funny names, but they can cause serious problems! That's why in 2016, if you are still using your old browser, you will be required to update it to use PaperBackSwap. Before 2016, you may have intermittent issues accessing and using PaperBackSwap as well as elsewhere on the Internet - while these are annoying, they should be a reminder that your software is insecure, so you are wide open to malware and system attacks!
You can check if your browser is safe by going to this page.
The good news is that it's pretty easy to update your system software for Mac, and if you have OS 10.6.8 or later, it's one step and totally free! Here's the link you can use.
If your system software is older than Mac OS 10.6, it's a little bit more complicated, but really not terrible. Here's the link to the software you need to update to 10.6. From there you can update to 10.6.8 using Software Update on your computer, and then you can use the link in the paragraph above to update to the latest Mac OS (OS 10.11) for free.
If you have a Windows computer, you should be running at least Windows 7 (or a newer version), and your browser should be at least: Internet Explorer version 11, Opera version14, FireFox version 31, or Chrome version 30.
We wish software could work forever without updating, and that hackers and malware did not exist, but because they do and they are always discovering vulnerabilities in our computer systems that they can exploit, keeping your software current is a very important, minor chore for anyone who participates on the Internet at all. If you update regularly (there's a setting on your computer that will even allow the updates to happen automatically), it will be pretty painless, and the benefits well worth it - you'll keep your computer running well, and your personal information safe. You can read a little bit more about this in this Help doc.
So start the process to update now, Randi- the sooner the better. We don't want your computer to be hacked - and we want you to be able to continue to use PaperBackSwap!
