Dear Members,

So many of you have asked when our school donation program will launch again - we're happy to announce that Books for Schools 2014 is now live!

Each year PaperBackSwap, through our generous members, donates brand-new books to selected deserving elementary schools across the country. The goal of the program is to provide children with books that they can read for pleasure. Most of us learned the love of reading at an early age, and this is a great opportunity to share that joy. In the past three years PaperBackSwap and our members have donated over 70,000 new books! Last year, we reached our goal of 25,000 books sent to 24 deserving elementary schools. Check the details of last year's recipient schools to see wonderful photos of the children receiving the books (here is an example from last year), and see their thank-you cards. If you know of an elementary school in need, suggest it here and we will consider it for our next Books for School donation drive.

Your donation of credits and/or PaperBackSwap Money (which is used to defray some of the shipping costs) or both help us to put books in the hands of children. Together PaperBackSwap and our wonderful members do make a difference!

Most of the participating schools this year are large, with enrollments of between 400 and 700. The school roster includes a special-ed school in AL, and one of the participating schools (in WV) does not actually have its own library, but the local library they visit weekly has stepped up to collect and distribute books to the students - bravo to them for helping with this! And those of you who read about our visit to the Belize Children's Home might want to look in on the Adopt-a-School drive for the abused and abandoned children who are being lovingly cared for there.

Thanks in advance for your help - the kids really appreciate the books!

Richard and
The PaperBackSwap Team

DEAR LIBRARIAN

Dear Librarian - I use the Requestor Conditions option to make sure I get books from non-smoking households only. But I just requested an audio CD book and the other member declined to mail it because they "got it used and didn't know what households the book has been in before" . It's an audio CD, so the non-smoking requirement isn't as important! I just want to be sure my books don't smell smoky -- shouldn't the other member have asked me about it before declining? --  Disappointed in Denver

Dear Denny,

We're sorry that you weren't able to get that copy of the book! The system doesn't permit senders to contact requestors until after they have accepted a request, which is why this sender could not contact you to discuss the book. We designed the system that way so that bookswapping did not become complicated by prolonged discussions about books. We want bookswapping to remain simple; it's one of the best things about PaperBackSwap. However, it does mean that if you use Requestor Conditions (RCs) and they are not totally clear, or you submit a request with conditions that don't actually apply to that specific book, you could miss out on that copy of a book. It's best to be sure that your RCs are easy to interpret and do apply to the book you are requesting (for example, you might turn off your RCs before requesting an audio book, since the nonsmoking issue does not concern you for audio books). The good news is that if your request is declined for RCs, your request is automatically passed along to another sender, or if there aren't any other copies in the system, you'll go onto the Wish List to get the next copy that becomes available.

If your request is declined for RCs and you want to try to get that copy (it could still be available if no one else has requested it), you can turn off your RCs in your account settings by choosing "No" at the top of the RCs section on that page and clicking Update to apply that change, then searching for that ISBN in the system and clicking "Order this book" on the listing to request it again.

We hope you'll be offered another copy of the book soon!
