Dear Members,

"I'll get to that...someday." How many of you have said it just this month, or last week, or even today? From all accounts, Someday will be a great day! That's the day we'll make that phone call to an old friend, plan that trip, check out that new bistro, take that course, try that new haircut, read that book, write that story, send that "thinking about you" card, learn CPR, enroll in a self-defense class...and so on.  We want to do so much, but it seems like there isn't ever enough time. I'm guilty of it too - who isn't?

It's not a new message: life is short, and we should enjoy it while we can. It's easy to SAY that. It's much harder to do it, isn't it? I'd like to try, though, and I'm inviting you to join in!

A first step could be to make a list of things we want to do. It's ok to start with generalities (like "eat more healthily" or "exercise more"), but to make things more possible, get more specific ("eat more vegetables" or "walk more") and then more specific still ("make kale chips recipe" or "take a fifteen minute walk"). Now, I'm not suggesting yet another To Do list. This list is for things we want to do -- not things we feel we have to do. Every life has enough "have to" in it already!

After putting down all that comes to mind over a few days or a week, then let's take a good look at the list. Is there a way to bring any of the "air castles" down to earth, or combine some items? Maybe "catch up with old friends" could mean that you all sign up for a self-defense (or knitting, or origami, or cooking) class together. For faraway friends or family, why not schedule a virtual cocktail hour/coffee break by Skype or FaceTime? It could even be a weekly or monthly thing.

Maybe we won't get very far down our lists - and maybe (with any luck) our lists will keep growing, as we acknowledge our dreams, and as we grow more aware of what we really want from our lives. Maybe items don't even get crossed off, but just the making of the lists may cause us to pay attention to the little joys of everyday. Perhaps this time next year we'll have made some great memories.

Can we turn Someday into Today? Let's find out!

All the best,

Richard and
The PaperBackSwap Team

MEMBER OF THE MONTH

Lisa N. (dukensa)

Yvonne has been a member since 2007 - her PBS-aversary is coming up in less than a month! She's swapped several thousand books in that time, and she has a superb swapping record. She's been a generous donor to Books for Schools and also Friends of PBS - members like Lisa are the backbone of the club!   Many enjoyed her forum celebration of her newest shelter adoptee,  She's a solid presence in the Games Forum and the RAOK forum  -- her kindness has not gone unnoticed!

"Lisa always says the kindest things in the forums, and has sent out numerous RAOK items, and I would love to see her generosity rewarded with MOM!

"She is a very considerate and giving person."

"I love hearing about her rescue animals - her stories inspire other people to adopt from a shelter, and that's the greatest gift of all."

Lisa, members like you are the soul of the club; you are Member of the Month for July.  Congratulations!

If you have any nominations for Member of the Month, submit them to us hereYour nomination will not "expire"--anyone you nominate will have a chance at getting Member of the Month if enough nominations accumulate over time. Each month the person who has the most votes accumulated when the Newsletter goes to press gets to be Member of the Month and gets a newsletter mention and a nifty MoM icon to wear on profile and forum posts with pride.  So go for it! Tell us who's helped you in the Forums, who's been a great swapper, who in your opinion is a credit to PBS.  We are keeping a list of all the nominated members.  Who knows--one of them might be YOU!

DEAR LIBRARIAN

Dear Librarian - I got a request for a book and I would love to send it out!  But I am away from home on vacation and won't be able to mail this for realistically another couple of weeks. Can the requestor wait? Is there a way to extend the request deadline so I can mail this book out? I don't want to disappoint the other member.  -- On Vacation from Valdosta

Dear Val,

We hope you are enjoying your vacation!  There isn't a way of extending the request deadline - you still have 5 days in which to respond to the request and from there your deadline to mark mailed is determined by the mail-by date you choose. If you forget to put your account on Vacation Hold when you go away (this will prevent incoming requests while you are not at home -or for any reason unable to mail out books for a while), you can do one of two things (1) decline the request and let the other member's request pass to another person who has the book, so that she or he will get the book from that person, OR (2) contact the other member using the PM button on the request on your My Account page, and explain the situation, and ask if your later mailing date would be OK.  If you choose #1, just click "I cannot mail" and then you can repost the book when you get back and are able to mail again.   If you choose #2, you need to wait for the other member's response. If she or he doesn't consent to the late mailing (or doesn't respond to your PM at all), just let the transaction cancel and again repost the book when you are back and able to mail.  If the other member consents to the late mailing, you have to be sure to **mark the book mailed** before the deadline - even if you haven't mailed it! The system doesn't know about your arrangement in Personal Messages to mail late, and the deadline won't be affected by that agreement. So, if the requestor consents to late mailing you need to access (= view or download) the address from the request and this will enable you to mark the book mailed before the request times out and cancels.

No matter whether you choose #1 or #2, you should put your account on Vacation Hold using the link at the top of your My Bookshelf page (also in the menu under  My Account at the top of any page on the site). Sometimes PaperBackSwap membership is all about reading and not mailing - we hope you brought enough books with you on your trip.  The Vacation Hold will make your Bookshelf unavailable during the time frame that you choose, so you won't get more book requests while you are working on your tan!
