Dear Members,

We have a little pop quiz for you!  Q: What is a terrific thing to get in the mail? A: We know you are thinking "A book from PaperBackSwap!" Well, true...BUT we think we can top even that.  We love hearing back from the elementary schools that participated in Books for Schools!  For those who are new to the club, Books for Schools is our yearly holiday donation program, in which we use member-donated credits and PBS Money to purchase and ship thousands of new books to needy elementary schools. As a result of December 2013's campaign, 25,000 new books were purchased and distributed.

Remember Standiford Elementary, in Modesto, CA? They're the school that told us  "...our library is the heart of our school for ALL of our students. Many students are unable to visit the county libraries, and our school library is their only place to borrow books. Our school budget for new books is almost zero, with only a small amount from the district which usually goes towards required books. The library's circulation is so high that many books are being held together by packing tape, and any new books coming in are from used book donations."

And Granby Elementary in Virginia? They're the school with the Listening Ears program, "through the SPCA where dogs of all shapes and sizes come in to listen to students read. It is designed to help both new and reluctant readers develop their reading skills." Budget cuts have affected so many of their literacy programs.

We were thrilled to hear from both of them, with photos!

From Standiford Elementary
Dear PBS Members,

Once again, we are so appreciative for all of the books you sent our school.  All of our children are thankful. You can see how happy you've made these kids.  :)

Thanks again!

From Granby Elementary
Granby Elementary distributed the donated books to our students.  They all left with two books each and huge smiles on their faces.  They were so excited to get them.  We would just like to say thank you to all the donators whether with credits or money.  It is a great program and we were truly grateful that we were lucky enough to be chosen to participate.

Thanks again,

It may be corny, but we'll say it - there is nothing like the smile on a child's face. The cost of each smile: one Book Credit. Knowing that the smile is caused by a book? Priceless.

Check out more pictures from the schools on the School Donations page - click the Completed Schools (2013) tab and then choose a specific school in the list.

Thanks for making Books for Schools 2013 a great success. We're so proud to be involved with such a generous group!

Richard and
The PaperBackSwap Team

MEMBER OF THE MONTH

Paula N (panick)

Paula joined PaperBackSwap in 2006, and since then has sent out over 700 books without a problem reported!  She could be celebrated for her excellent swapping alone...but she doesn't stop there.  Paula has dedicated herself to improving the site as a volunteer Data Correction Approver and Book Image Approver.  You may have Paula to thank, the next time a book listing helps you to decide whether or not to request that book! She's definitely an outstanding contributor to the club behind the scenes; and she's also gotten a lot of nominations over her years from members who say she's simply a joy to know.

In swapping, volunteering and just plain being nice - Paula, you're the trifecta! You are Member of the Month for February.  Congratulations!

If you have any nominations for Member of the Month, submit them to us hereYour nomination will not "expire"--anyone you nominate will have a chance at getting Member of the Month if enough nominations accumulate over time. Each month the person who has the most votes accumulated when the Newsletter goes to press gets to be Member of the Month and gets a newsletter mention and a nifty MoM icon to wear on profile and forum posts with pride.  So go for it! Tell us who's helped you in the Forums, who's been a great swapper, who in your opinion is a credit to PBS.  We are keeping a list of all the nominated members.  Who knows--one of them might be YOU!

DEAR LIBRARIAN

Dear Librarian - I accepted a book request, and then...it started to snow. My mailing date is tomorrow, but we're snowed in!  I got the email reminding me to mark the book mailed from my account page or the transaction will cancel.  Can I change the mail-by date? Will I still get credit if I mail after the transaction cancels? - Snowbound Outside Salem

Dear SOS,

Don't worry!  Other members understand that weather happens.  Safety is your first concern, of course.  The deadline to mark mailed can't be changed in the system once it has been assigned, BUT you can contact the other member and make sure it's OK if the book is mailed a little late (it should be!). Use the PM button on the transaction to let the other member know you'd like to mark the book "mailed" to prevent the cancellation but you won't be mailing for a few days after that, and asking if that's OK with her. If she agrees (and she should! she's probably snowed in too), you can mark mailed to prevent the cancellation, even though you haven't mailed yet. If she responds that she'd prefer you canceled the transaction instead of mailing late, you can let the transaction cancel and repost the book to offer it again when the snow is clear.  The Help doc "Can I send a book later?" in the Help Center has more information about this question. It's not OK to mark books "mailed" before mailing as a habit - but everyone needs to be a little flexible when the weather gets crazy!

You shouldn't mail after a transaction cancels, since the system will pass the request along to another member if there are other copies available in the club. If a transaction cancels before you mail the book, just repost the book when you can send it. If the other member isn't getting a copy from someone else, yours will be offered to her again.

Stay safe, SOS...maybe you can make a dent in your TBR Pile while the kids are out building snowmen!
