P.S. 123Q School is a public elementary school located in South Ozone Park Queens, New York.  The school is occupied by students who attend the Pre-K to 5th grade.  P.S. 123Q is diverse with students and staff from various countries that speak different languages and bring traditions and customs to the school.

The school has been classified as a Title 1 School due to the low- socio-economic status. The students that attend the school are either in foster care, living in shelters or being raised in single parent households.  This effects the student’s education, health, attendance, and parent involvement.  Even though education is not their first priority, students that attend the school enjoy coming and learning every day.

Presently we do not have a working library.  Books are old and in poor condition.  We decided as a whole, students and staff, to have a book drive.  We knew we needed to somehow to promote the importance of reading.  Students came together to collect, to sort and sell gently used books.  Students and parents were delighted to buy a book or two to bring home and to read and share.  Everyone’s dedication and hard work made it a great success and we hope to do it again.

We currently have a guided reading program for students in grades K-5, where students are grouped according to their reading level.  Reading is taught, skills are practiced, and independent reading takes place.

We are in need of books grades K-5 in all reading levels in order to continue the interest and love of reading for all students.  Our goal is to make reading an integral part of students’ lives. Reading needs to become important within their community.  Students and parents need to realize that no matter what you’re wanting to do or become you can’t do it without reading.

The Books for Schools Donation Program is giving us here at P.S. 123Q School an opportunity to expose our students and families to new and exciting experiences, to build self-confidence, improve understanding, and boost imagination, creativity, and start the journey of having a life learning passion for reading.

We thank you!!!!!
