The Good Husband of Zebra Drive (No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, Bk 8)
Review Date: 9/1/2007

I love this whole series and this one is just as good as the rest. Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni decides that he would like to handle a case for Mma Ramotswe. Mma Ramotswe has reservations about this but decides to let him go ahead. Also, Mma Ramotswe and Mma Makutsi have a falling out and Mma Makutsi decides to leave the agency. Reading a book from this series is like having a chat with an old friend.

Cannie Shapiro feels like she is coping pretty well with life. Sure, she isn't currently dating anyone, and she can't stand her mother's lesbian life-partner, and her father deserted the family and never looked back ... but she has a good job writing for the Philadelphia Examiner, good friends, a dog ... then one day she opens up a women's magazine and sees an article titled "Loving a Larger Woman" written by her ex-boyfriend. Cannie is devastated and humiliated. This is the story of Cannie's life starting from this point forward. It made me laugh and it made me cry - perfect "chic lit"! I liked that fact that Cannie has her ups and downs like a real human being, but she endures.

Police Lieutenant Phoebe MacNamara is a hostage negotiator. She discovered she had a knack for it when she was just a child and a violent man broke into her house and took her family hostage. She is also the divorced mother with a seven year old daughter. She meets Duncan Swift when one of Duncan's employees attempts suicide and Phoebe talks him out of it. Duncan and Phoebe's love affair is set against the backdrop of Phoebe being assaulted at work and then stalked by a killer. A good thriller that kept me turning pages to see what would happen next.

Kabul Beauty School: An American Woman Goes Behind the Veil

Debbie Rodriguez went to Afghanistan as an aid worker. She went because she has a big heart and also to escape from her abusive husband. She is a hairdresser and at first feels like she cannot contribute much as everyone else on her aid team is trained in the medical field. She eventually learns that the Taliban closed all of the hair salons because they thought they were immoral. Debbie ends up going back to Afghanistan to open up a school as being a hairdresser is one of the few jobs open to women. She also ends up in an arranged marriage to an Afghani man - and they don't even speak each other's language when the first get married!! The book is basically a series of stories about the people she encountered in her life in Kabul. Some of the stories were horrifying, some of them were amusing. It gave me a glimpse into the life of an Afghani woman ... and made me very glad that I live here in the USA, not in Afghanistan!

This is the third book featuring Lavinia and Tobias ... and this book reads more like a murder mystery than a romance novel. Tobias is haunted by the memory of an old friend who turned out to be an assassin. While Tobias knows that the assassin has been dead for three years, someone has turned up imitating his methods. It is up to Lavinia and Tobias to figure out the mystery before anyone else dies. This mystery kept me guessing right up until the very end ... very entertaining!

Sookie Stackhouse is still dating Bill the Vampire. Eric, the master vampire to whom Bill owes allegiance, has asked Sookie for a favor - and she cannot refuse. He wants her to go to Dallas to use her telepathic skills to aid the vampires to track down one of their missing "brothers". There is also the mystery of the murder of the cook at the bar where Sookie works to solve. This was a fun murder mystery to read. I liked the additional shapeshifters and other non-humans in the story.

Another fun regency romance by Amanda Quick. Iphiginia Bright is trying to catch the person responsible for blackmailing her Aunt. To do this, she must move about "in society", so she takes on the persona of the mistress of the notorious Earl of Masters. She believes him to be dead (as was indicated by the blackmailer). Imagine her surprise when he shows up one night at a ball she is attending. He doesn't believe her at first about the blackmailing until the blackmailer targets one of his friends. Then, the two of them decide to work together to expose the blackmailer. Loved the interactions between the characters!

Molly Murphy's mother told her she was trouble as soon as Molly learned to talk. Molly was told that if her mouth didn't get her in trouble, her curiosity would. Well, Molly is surely in trouble. She is an Irish peasant who has just killed an aristocrat. She knows that it won't matter that she killed in self-defense, so she runs away. She ends up on a ship to America having assumed the identity of another woman. There is more trouble in store for her when she arrives at Ellis Island - a murder is committed and the police keep coming back to Molly to question her. This was a fun murder mystery. I liked the descriptions of turn of the century the immigrant experience - those people had to be tough!

This was a fun beach read. Nate Burke, a depressed, burned-out cop from Baltimore accepts a job as the police chief in Lunacy, Alaska. Of course, he falls head over heels for the pretty local bush pilot (the love at first sight part was the only part of the book that I thought was a little over the top). I loved all the characters in the town of Lunacy and the mystery of who killed Pat Galloway 16 years ago kept me guessing right up until the very end.

Yelena is in prison for murder, scheduled for execution. On the day she is scheduled to hang, luck is on her side. The commander's food taster has just died and the law says that the next prisoner scheduled for execution must be offered the job of food taster. Yelena has a choice - accept the position and live under the constant threat of being poisoned, or hang as scheduled. Being around the commander as food taster puts Yelena in a position to know about Ixian politics and she is soon drawn into a plot to overthrow the commander. I really liked the heroine, Yelena. She never gives up and keeps her wits about her when she is in danger.

The Drake sisters are falling in love one by one and this time it is Hannah's turn. I liked this book because it had as much mystery/thriller in it as romance. Someone tried to kill Hannah and nearly succeeded. While she struggles to recover from the vicious attack, the rest of the family bands together to try and figure out who is trying to kill her and why. Jonas Harrington has always tried to protect the Drake sisters and felt like they were his adopted family. When Hannah almost dies, he finally finds the courage to tell her that he has always loved her. The romance part of the story was very predictable, but the mystery part was interesting.

This is a gothic romance novel about Nicoletta, an orphan from a small village with a special gift for healing and knowing when someone needs her. Because of her "gift" the villagers try to hide and protect her from outsiders because they are afraid that she will be burned as a witch. The village owes fealty to the nearby Don Scaretti who resides in the mansion nicknamed by the locals as the Palazzo della Morte (Palace of Death). Nicoletta's mother was one of the women who died there under mysterious circumstances. All of the wives of all of the Scarletti men have died and the Scarletti family is said to be under a curse. Unfortunately for Nicoletta, Don Giovanni Scarletti has noticed her in spite of the villagers' efforts to keep her hidden and he invokes his rights of choosing a bride from the maidens who reside on his land. Will Nicoletta survive the Scarletti family curse? This book was a page turner.

This tells the story of Valerius, the Dark Hunter that everyone despises because he was a Roman and his grandfather was the one who tortured and crucified Kyrian. Enter Tabitha, the vampire hunter and sparks fly! I really enjoyed the interaction between Tabitha and Valerius; they are such opposites. You also get to learn a lot more about the whole Dark-Hunter world and all the deities within. Since there are so many characters in this book that were introduced in previous books, I think it is best to read these books in order to truly understand what is going on (this is book #7). I am enjoying the Dark-Hunter series and plan to keep reading!

Lily Whitney is a scientist with a brilliant mind. Her father, Peter Whitney, was involved in paranormal research because Lily possessed psychic abilities. Peter Whitney was performing experiments for the military on men who volunteered for special training. These men are mostly special forces. But ... something has gone wrong with the experiment and the men are dying. The government has deemed them too dangerous to be set free. Peter calls in Lily to consult with him on his research and then disappears the next day. This is a fun story of conspiracy and danger with a little bit of romance thrown in as well. I enjoyed it.

Turns out that the harmless relic she purchased the previous day from a run down antique shop is actually a priceless stolen relic and the local guild boss who owns it wants it back. Too bad that Celinda's dust bunny runs off with the relic. Davis Oakes, the private investigator is not going to let Celinda out of his sight until the dust bunny returns the relic. Celinda is in danger from the people who originally stole the relic and thought it to be safely hidden in the second hand shop. Another light, fun read set in Harmony. Loved the antics of the dust bunnies!

The Dark-Hunters are exteremely powerful and are required to live by the Dark-Hunter code: Harm no human, Drink no blood, Never fall in love. When a Dark-Hunter defies this code, the Alexion is sent out to bring the Dark-Hunters back into line. The Alexion has the power to kill Dark-Hunters. The Dark-Hunters are stirred up because several of them have regained their souls (in the previous books) and achieved new happiness - the ones who are left behind are grumbling - and the Spathi-Daimons are taking advantage of this to stir them up to open revolt against Acheron. Acheron sends out the Alexion to quell the rebellion. But, since this is a romance novel - the Alexion falls in love with a Dark-Hunteress named Danger. I like the way that each Dark-Hunter novel reveals a little more about the Dark-Hunter world, and Acheron. I would definitely recommend reading them in order.

This was a funny book - with "dark" humor. Joey figured out that she had married a jerk when her husband threw her off a cruise ship. What Chaz Perrone didn't figure on was that his beautiful wife was also a championship swimmer. Joey manages to save herself from drowning - and is rescued by an ex-cop named Mick Stranaham. With Mick's assistance, Joey comes up with a plan for revenge on her husband. Carl Hiaasen always writes up wacky characters and this book is no exception ... a great, funny beach read!

Lavinia Lake was unhappy with Mr. Tobias March from the first minute that she met him. He told her he was trying to save her, but she didn't like it one bit when he forced her to leave her antiques shop in Rome and return to London and smashed all of her wares in the process. When she returns to London and once again encounters Mr. March, they work out an uneasy alliance so that they can keep track of each other. I like Amanda Quick's romantic heroines - they have spunk and the alliance between Lavinia and Tobias reminded me a little bit of the old TV show "Moonlighting" - very entertaining!
