Loved this book - I found the first 1/2 easy to read, but not very compelling, but it picks up speed and ends delightfully!

Well, I feel a little silly about this because everyone else loved this book - but I didn't find it very interesting. I got through the first 50 pages and I found the telling of the story not very gripping. Maybe I'm not well enough read about South Africa or I don't care enough about rugby/sports - but I'm not going to be able to finish it :(

My daughter has Rett Syndrome, so this book has been on my reading list for a long time. I thought it was a well written book, very much about the author's own journey of acceptance of her disabled daughter, Kat. It mirrored a lot of the same feelings that I have, but I noticed that I sometimes have very different feelings from the author. I know this book spans 24 years of Kat's life, but I'm impressed how often the author got to "get away" on outdoor adventures often with her other typical children, always finding a babysitter to take care of Kat for days on end. Child care, especially overnight care, always seems like an unattainable dream for me.

I wanted to love this book. I really, really wanted to, but I found it too sparely written. I wanted to know more about what she did and why, I wanted to know more details about her husband. It was a little too ethereal for me.

Somehow I always have trouble finishing National Book award winners. They are often not very compelling for me. I made it to page 98 when I decided that I did not care about the main characters or what happened to them.
