I honestly WANTED to read this book but 30 pages in, I was bored & confused & couldnt care. It sounded like a good book but to me, the premise was way better than the start. I was bored & so I quit reading. The writing style sucked & I do mean was very badly written, to the point that I had to go back to the book cover to make sure this was a book I wanted to read. Over & Over & over again. To the point where I realized this was a book that was not as good as its description made it sound. Maybe I missed a good book but I let this book go after 30-60 pages & I do not miss having read it!

I loved "Stones from the River," but haven't found another Hegi book to equal that one. This book is adequately written and the characters' descriptions are present; however, I didn't find the plot to be easily understood and certainly not memorable. There simply are too many questions that went unanswered. By the conclusion of the book, I was barely skimming to finish it . Perhaps the standard by which I measure Ursula Hegi has been set too high given the connection I felt to "Stones from the River." This is an average book in my estimation.

This is the 2nd book from this author that I have read. Her writing style is very different and can be hard to follow but it is worth it in the end. I never expected the story to have the tweist it did in the end.
