Wolferl is the third recent picture book about Mozart to appear, and it covers his early childhood. Weil's pen-and-ink and watercolor drawings are as light and airy as Mozart's early music, and her cartoon style is stronger and more successful here than in some of her recent books. The brief text is anecdotal and appealing. Children read about Wolferl standing up on tip-toes to push the organ pedals, climbing into the lap of the empress Maria Theresa to give her a kiss, and playing hide-and-seek with Marie Antoinette. « less
