This story is the story of a poor white family growing up in the rural south. Jim Grimsley has a way of making the characters come to life such that you want to find out what happens to them. Unfortunately, this being a "slice-of-live" book, you only get this short glimpse into their lives and then the book is over. The fact that I didn't want it to be done when it was is testament to the story and to the main character, Danny Crell, a hemophiliac son in this dysfunctional family. (Note, for those of you who wanted to continue to read more, like myself, Danny's story continues in Grimsley's novel Comfort and Joy.)

Excellent, read in one sitting. Depressing but still a good read.
Excellently written story about poor family with abusive alcoholic father. Very moving and poignant.
A fairly short but very intense read.
