I was hoping for a more indepth historical perspective. This book was a combination of romantic fiction and very light historical information. There was a greater amount of the romantic fiction.

I was excited to read this book. I was interested in learning more about this historical warrior. However, after reading the book, I was severely disappointed. I found myself rolling my eyes at much of the dialogue and the thoughts of the characters. The situations and relationships were ridiculous and overly dramatic. I am sure it wasn't all sugar and rainbows during this warring time.
But the way the author portrayed it was that everyone was having sex with everyone they met or, if they didn't have sex with a person, they harbored sexual desires for that person. It was as if the author said to himself, "Well, no one knows much about this person so I can make up whatever I want and make it as dramatic as possible." The plot got bogged down by this unnecessary drama. It was like 60 AD's version of a soap opera.
As much as I anticipated this book, it was a bit of a letdown.
