WAIT! ….. so they waited, all their plans deferred
Waited, so long that many gave up
On ever finding any sort of place in the sun
But others shouted in despair, until their throats were sore
Still others had unfortunate encounters, caught, though they ran
Not wanting to fill a spot in the precinct, to be treated like a piece of meat
Hoping that soon it would be over
That they might again someday, take a stroll in the summer air so sweet
But the heart sagged
With the awareness of still bearing that load
And so …………… some exploded

*a Golden Shovel poem pulled from Harlem, by Langston Hughes
