Vaughan Roberts was an undergraduate at the University of Cambridge, where he was President of the Christian Union. He moved to Oxford to serve as curate under David Fletcher at St. Ebbe's church. One of his responsibilities was to look after the student work. When David Fletcher retired, Roberts became Rector of St. Ebbe's.
