After hearing glowing recommendations from several trusted sources, I was eager to read this novel and had not read the author's debut novel Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows. For some reason, perhaps because of the illustrated cover, I was anticipating a 'chick lit' story of the international travel adventures of three sisters. I quickly realized that this story would have much more depth than I expected.

Rajni, Jazmeen, and Shirina, three sisters of Punjabi heritage, grew up in London. When the novel opens, their mother is terminally ill and the sisters learn that she has created an itinerary for a pilgrimage to India for them. As the story unfolds, the reader discovers that each sister is dealing with a personal crisis that she is hiding from the other sisters because they have drifted apart. We also learn of their mother's final difficult days and the impact that had on each sister.

I listened to the audiobook narrated by Soneela Nankani and Deepti Gupta; one voiced the mother and the other read all other parts. I may not have finished this book if I had been reading a print copy; the storyline of Jazmeen, the middle sister, and her 'crisis' seemed to drag on far too long. However, in the end, I'm grateful I listened to the end as I came to appreciate each of the sister characters.
