I enjoyed very little of this book and I read it all the way to the end. There was way too much detail and I found it difficult to relate to these people. Since it won the national book award (or some such) in 1970 I expected more from this book or maybe I just missed the whole point. I usually enjoy Joyce Carol Oates's books, but this one did nothing for me.
