Good adventure read.
One of Smith's best efforts. You won't have to chew on this one to read it. Al Trimm
A present day archaelogical discovery in Africa of a long-lost city triggers a present day clash between people and cultures. The tale of the people and history of the ruins is also told, interwoven in a story of modern passions as well as the previous life of the same characters from centuries in the past. Vivid writing and very well done with the author's usual expertise and intimate knowledge of Africa.
This guy is one of my favorite authors, if not THE favorite. This book is one of his best. Exciting adventure that involves looking for a lost city. I would recommend reading ALL of Wilbur Smiths books, not just this one.
great classic Smith book in his finest style.
From the dramatic whirlpool of Africa, big game hunts, terrorism and intrigue, the protagonists of an urgent modern adventure are swept back in time, through the battle, romance and tragedy of their pasts in the savage epoch of Carthage.
Good adventure story of an archeological dig and the people who built a city destroyed thousands of years ago.
I had read this book as a teen and wanted to read it again. To be clear, it IS classic old style Wilbur Smith. It also carries with it the classic old Wilbur Smith racism. I didn't remember his writing that way until reading The Sunbird. I had to put it down, I found it so offensive.
Another Smith adventure thriller. This one is centered in Egypt and with a brilliant archaeologist.
My very first Wilbur Smith novel. I must have read it 6 times over the years. A durable favorite. Slightly stilted dialogue, but a well-rounded, very "real" cast of characters -some you love, some you respect, some you fear, some you hate. Set against one of Wilbur Smith's "might have been" histories that draws you in and makes you a believer.
Wilbur Smith outdoes himself in this tale of an archaeological team trying to find the lost city of Opet, supposedly built by Egyptians. I didn't know anything about the tale and loved it! Dawn
What a great mix of past and present events! Mr. Smith has done a greajob writing this book.
Originally bought the novel because one of my favorite bands, "Opeth", is named after the city in the book. It's a bit drawn-out and overly descriptive in the beginning, but finds its stride and becomes a page-turner in the second half. Not bad at all.
Smith is always great.
Smith does his research - I always learn something from his books. tj

The is an entertaining book which deals with the Curse of the White Ghost. Dr. Benjamin Kazan, an archeologist, discovers a lost city that he has been searching for all his professional life. The belief has others in his field ridiculing his efforts but despite this he finds the lost city of Opet. Strangely parallel to his own life, the king of the city and his patron and good friend are remarkably alike in appearance. In addition, the king had a friend like Benjamin himself. That friend loved a woman who was like the woman that Benjamin loved. In addition, a man named Xhai, a little black man has identical skills and name to one who lived in Opet. Coincidence? Or, are they the same people who once lived in the lost city of Opet? This exciting read ends with a great battle.
