I love this historical romance. This is the kind of book that I like to read at Christmas time--one that make me feel happy and content. That is exactly how I felt, when I finished reading The Substitute Bride. The plot is fun, the main characters seem like real people, and the setting makes me think I might like to live in the town of Shepherd, Michigan.
Sonja is a wonderful heroine. She is a very strong woman, yet her humility is amazing, and she has a sparkling sense of humor that is very appealing. She definitely has a servant's heart. Louis is not the type of man that I would generally think of as a hero--a serious railroad executive, but he really does shine in this story. His thoughtfulness is beyond every woman's dream.
This story gives readers a wonderful example of how home is not necessarily a place, but it is the people who care about you.
I recommend this book to those who are looking for a fresh, satisfying read.
