This book is interesting because it details life in Palestine before WWI, under Turkish rule. There is a Zionist spy ring in the village where the action takes place. A member is caught and talks. The Turks demand the surrender of a specific man. Remembering the recent Turkish genocide in Armenia, one woman gives the man up, which angers others. The woman mysteriously dies, probably poisoned. The interactions between Arabs and Jews, Zionists and non-Zionists, etc. bring a different perspective to life in Palestine.
