The Steeplechase is an excellent historical romance novella, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I love the historic elements, which paint a clear picture of life and attitudes of America's citizens in Tidewater Virginia in 1810. It is interesting to see that some are still loyal to Britain. The author does an exceptional job at portraying the mindset of men and women toward each other and also toward people of different classes.
Even though this book is short, the main characters are well developed. I found it easy to like and appreciate both Martha and Phillip. Young Johnny is a sweetheart. Graham is quite a despicable character, even though he attempts to portray himself in a more favorable light.
I love the ending of this moving story. It turns out to be better than either Martha or Phillip hoped or dreamed.
If you like historical romance, I think you will enjoy The Steeplechase by Carrie Fancett Pagels.
