In the future humans might be able to explore parts of the Universe outside our solar system. They may work in international space cities, making things to send back to Earth. We might even be able to mine asteroids for precious minerals. Driving home from work one evening, Helen Sharman, OBE, heard a radio advertisement: 'Astronaut wanted - no experience necessary'. Project Juno was an historic Russian Space mission which would provide Britain with its first astronaut. Over 13,000 people applied and Helen soon found herself among the final four, then two, candidates, at Russia's Star City cosmonaut training centre. In May 1991, she was hurtling at 18,000 mph around the earth sixteen times a day, on an eight day mission. Since her return from space Helen has become one of Britain's leading 'Ambassadors of Science'.« less
