Malina and Pilch have written a series of excellent "commentaries" on much of the New Testament, viewing the test through the prism of what we know of ancient Jewish culture in the Graeco-Roman context. This runs counter to much traditional interpretation, which sees the New Testament as timeless, as it was written through the Holy Spirit. Personally I found this approach a breath of fresh air,
