If you'd like to meet a real cow puncher, you'll enjoy Clint, the bronc peeler. He'll tell you all about his favorite pony, Smoky, who lived a full horse's life in cow country in the early 1900s. Will James, himself a cowboy and rancher, tells this story with the warmth that only love of an animal can inspire.

Smoky knows only one way of life: freedom. Living on the open range, he is free to go where he wants and do what he wants. And being a smart colt, he learns what he must in order to survive. He can beat any enemy whether it be a rattlesnake or a hungry wolf. He is as much a part of the wild west as it is of him, and Smoky can't imagine anything else.

But when he comes across a new enemy, one that walks on two legs and makes funny sounds. Smoky can't beat this enemy like he has all the others. But does he really want to beat it? Or could giving up some freedom mean getting something else in return that's even more valuable?

This is one of my favorite horse stories. I always wonder what horses are thinking at certain times, this gives a good example. Plus, who wouldn't want a horse like Smoky? It goes through his training, different masters, and how he is treated affects him, and what can happen to horses in the right hands and the wrong hands.
