After publishing 3 or 4 mainstream books (mysteries involving the sea), Foy leaped to prominence with this excellent futuristic book that followed in the steps of William Gibson and told a wonderful story. It starts a bit slow, but picks up speed quickly. Written in first-person narrative, and in present tense style, it was a great read and drew a lot of attention 10 years ago. Unfortunately, his two books since (Contraband and Memory of Fire) haven't really measured up to The Shift.

But if you like Gibson and other cyberpunk-style work, The Shift should suit your tastes.
