I gave this 250 pages to win me over and it fell a little short. Rankin comes across intelligently, but there was too much inconsequential chat, and almost no action.
Great read for fans of British police procedurals and fans of hard-boiled detectives.
A great mystery with an unlikely hero.
Fine addition to the popular series.

A great mystery
This was my first experience with Rankin's Inspector Rebus series of books. I loved the plot lines that Rankin creates. They are exciting and unexpected. The Inspector Rebus character is edgy--throughout I was not 100% sure whether I liked him or not but I was always interested.

The investigation threatens to uncover a secret Rebus has spent years trying to conceal, and before long Rebus finds himself in the thick of a scandal with men who have no problem spilling blood to get what they want.
You can't help but love John Rebus! He tries so hard to do the right thing but always seems to end up with egg on his face. This was another great Rebus read with unique characters and an excellent complex plot. These books are great to read one after another as you can't get enough of Rebus. Ian Rankin makes you feel like you are in Edinburgh along with all these characters. Siobhan has turned out to be a great sidekick for Rebus and she is starting to sound just like Rebus. I love it! I'm now looking forward to reading the next book in the series and I would highly recommend this book to those who like gritty police procedurals.

I really enjoyed this book, though it took a couple of chapters to get into it. My mother in law gave it to me, and she has a thing for detective stories set in the UK.
