She’s gone at the age of 87
After surviving cancer five times
Often writing her SCOTUS opinions
From her hospital bed

Seeing her with her lace collar
Over the black SCOTUS uniform, and hearing
Her calm voice as she read those scathing opinions
Always cheered me

She never had a chance to retire
But stayed with us as long as she could
To help us stave off
The forces of darkness

But considering her age and poor health
Relying on her to save us
Was probably not
The best strategy
