Female sheriffs were not heard of in the 1930's-this is the main reason I guess I was drawn to this book-the story of a woman whose husband, the sheriff dies suddenly. Not long after taking office, a murder is committed. The man is found guilty (no spoiler here) and it is up to the sheriff to carry out the execution. Many in the town, most, actually, question if she can do it. She just wants to do her job, as the law demands. The last portion of the book is that part I found the most interesting. Her husbands 'secret' comes to light, quite by accident, as they all seem to-and it changes the way she feels about a lot, not just her husband, a man she thought was honorable, but how she lives her life as well. The ending was somewhat of a twist, and I wish the book had lasted longer.
