First I've read of this series - in the style of Ellis Peters, and a good read.
Of all of Kate Sedley's Roger the Chapman mysteries that I've read so far, this is the one with the most haunting ending.

Another well written tale of politics and intrigue. A restless messenger charged with delivering an important letter needs some protecting to get out of Plymouth safely. Fortunately or unfortunately for Roger Chapman the Duke of Gloucester trusts no one in these unsettled times when brother vs brother, but Roger has proven his mettle once before and seems the perfect man for the job.
Unsavory characters, tension and some superstition all meld together to make for a quick read. As the story winds up it becomes a bit transparent, but is still engaging and worth the read.

Interesting story and a quick read. I didn't read the first in this series, and I don't think you need to as enough is explained in this, the second, book.
It's the tale of an ordinary tradesman, who sells from town to town, and his involvement with royalty and political intrigue. In this case, he is to accompany a royal messenger, an unpleasant person who seems to have a number of people who wish him ill.
If you keep your wits about you, you can easily identify the person who succeeds in killing the messenger long before it becomes obvious to Roger the Chapman. I say "long before," but the entire story takes place over only a few days.
