The epic tale of Odysseus and his ten-year journey home after the Trojan War forms one of the earliest and greatest works of Western literature. Confronted by natural and supernatural threats--ship wrecks, battles, monsters and the implacable enmity of the sea-god Poseidon -- Odysseus must test his bravery and native cunning to the full if he is to reach his homeland safely and overcome the obstacles that, even there, await him.

One of the world's most vital tales.

This is one of the best stories I have ever read. I didn't even bother with it in School which is (now I know) disappointing. Would recommend and student to read and enjoy this fabulous book

Homer's epic part 2 to the Illiad, the Odyssey, describes Odysseus' long journey to attempt to return home after the Trojan war. Monsters, Sirens, Sourceresses and lots of action make this one of the greatest stories in history. A must read.

This is perhaps my favorite work in classical literature. An unparalleled adventure story, full of enough twists and turns to keep you turning pages. Yeah, it's a classic, but don't let that stop you from reading it.

"The oldest book worth reading for it's story, and the first novel of Europe"- T.E. Lawrence

Homer's classic, "The Odyssey", is required reading in many literature courses for one good reason: the archetypes of character, situations, and emotions are universal and still used today by modern writers. A timeless tale of one man's painful, 10-year journey back to his homeland after a long war, complete with obstacles such as pirates, cannibals, monsters, storms, witches, and the wrath of the sea-god, Poseidon. An aboslute must-read for anyone serious about literature, and I highly recommend this translation by Robert Fagles - it's perhaps the most readable version out there!

A defining classic of Greek Mythology in an excellent translation. It can be a bit challenging at times, but the quality of the translation certainly helps to make it far more readable. It should definitely be read by everyone, as a glimpse at the traditional story-telling so popular in Ancient Greece, and in tribute to the culture of Ancient Greece that is so essentially linked to our own.

I had heard of The Odyssey before and tried to read it on my own, but it wasn't until it was assigned in my World Lit class that I feel in love with it. It's full of adventure, vengeful gods, lusting goddesses, disguise, and mystery. I don't understand why few have really taken the time to read Homer's works.
I really liked this translation in particular, Robert Fitzgerald did an amazing job of making this ancient text easier to digest and analyze.
I highly recommend reading The Odyssey, whether you are an English major or not.

Both my daughter and I have read this book. It is an interesting book. One that is required for most 9th and 10th grade AP English students. It seems to follow along the lines of Troy the movie in some senses.

The ISBN here is for the Chapman translation of the Odyssey. The picture here is of the T.H. Lawrence translation. I am actually not familiar with these translations, but do recommend the Fagles, Fitzgerald and Lattimore translations.
