This took me a while to get into, but it was well-worth it. :) The main character, Mercy, is very likable but I felt the story didn't get going until half-way thru. There are lot of characters here who sort of come and go -- it makes them hard to keep track of -- but I think that will not be a problem as the series continues. Also, it didn't distract from the story at all.

This is a well-written book, with a good premise. Sort of a werewolf-based mystery. I love the author's take on werewolf culture; and her creativity with Mercedes particular brand of magic. The writing is crisp, welcoming and enjoyable. Her characters are nicely non-perfect, and all the more interesting for it. I am eagerly waiting for the next book because I think this is going to be a GREAT series to read.

Female mechanic Mercy Thompson, a coyote shapeshifter very familiar with werewolves, tries to help a newly turned werewolf but things go awry and she finds herself entangled in a complex plot. A couple of people mentioned that this was a little slow to get into - I didn't have this problem at all. I liked Mercy's character, probably for two main reasons. One was that she is smart. Throughout the book she trusts her instincts (true she second guesses herself on one point, but her instincts seem to be right). Also, as she tries to figure out the big picture and what is going on, she asks good questions and also figures out some things pretty quickly when she gets a good clue. I prefer that over a heroine who sits around confused and asks whats going on and the other characters who figured it out have to explain it to her for the reader to understand. The second reason is the way she handled the males in this story. But to go into more detail would be a spoiler. An enjoyable read. There will be a sequel - "Blood Bound" which I'm looking forward to. I'm probably going to look for more books by this author, this is the first book of her's I've read.

The Mercy Thompson books are very well written and I must say it took me by surprise. I had a bad experience with Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake series which started out great and then turned into weird erotica nonsense. This is nothing like that. It's science fiction the way it should be. I couldn't put either book down and found myself staying up late to finish. The heroine is independant yet maintains her femininity. Mercy Thompson was raised by werewolves but is a walker - a shape-shifter whose animal form is a coyote. As described on the back of one of the books, Mercy has friends in high and low places and often finds herself in somewhat dangerous situations. She always pulls through, of course, with a little help from her friends. Try it, there's a lot to like about Patricia Briggs's writing and characterizations. I can't wait for the next book! :-)

really nice series on a female shapeshifter (she can change instantly into a coyote without going thru the whole werewolf thing about morphing your body)..anyway, not much sex (which is nice for a change!), not much violence (which is nice for a change!) and she's a female car mechanic (which is nice for a change!). Enjoy.

Nice series opener. It was a little bogged down in introducing a pantheon of characters, but managed to carry plenty of plot in the mixture. Good to see a paranormal where werewolves are the primary protagonists. Recommended. :)

Very well-written werewolf mystery. The main character is a shape shifter (coyote) who must struggle to maintain her place in a society where werewolves and vampires control all. Not a typical werewolf fantasy but an engrossing mystery with a very strong female protaganist. I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to reading the sequel.

Interesting paranormal in a world filled with Fae, vampires, werewolves and other non-humans. Doesn't have any out-and-out romance but lots of possibilities for hopefully the next books. Great heroine and lots of good hero candidates.

Good read. Patricia Briggs did her usual good job of making the 'supernatural' feel 'natural'. One of the strengths of her worlds is their self-consistency but, for me at least, they tend to be a little depressing. The characters are not so much living life as toughing it out...

When the werewolf next door is severely injured and his daughter kidnapped, Mercy returns to the werewolves who raised her for help. Lots of page turning action - this book overlaps with the Alpha & Omega series as Mercy was raised by the Marrok's pack.

If you like reading Kelley Armstrong's "Women of the Otherworld" series... you are going to love the Mercy Thompson series from Patricia Briggs. Mercy is not a werewolf, but a "walker" who shapeshifts to coyote form. She is another smart, tough girl who is humble enough to know she isn't Wonder Woman, but strong enough to run with the bigger dogs. Now, if I can just find more of Patricia Briggs' books on PBS, I'll be happy!

As with many people in today's busy society I do not always have the time to indulge in my favorite pasttime. Generally, I get to read a few pages here and there. Not so with Moon Called. I found myself curled up in a corner of a couch, eagerly turning pages, and baring my teeth to anyone who disturbed me. This book captivates you from the first page and before you realize it, you are turning the last one. The characters are intriguing and very well thought out, especially Mercy. It was refreshing to read about a strong female in a very dominant, pack oriented group of males. I am eagerly looking forward to starting the next book in the series. Do not pass this book by. It is absolutely worth the time.

In Moon Called, the girl-next-door gets involved in a werewolf war. Mercy Thompson has her hands full because she is so embedded in the underground werewolf culture of her town in Washington state. Mercy isn't a werewolf herself''she can actually change into a coyote''but her neighbor is the Alpha male of the local pack, and that's where the trouble begins.

Author Patricia Briggs successfully creates Mercy as a likable protagonist and narrator. Mercy is single, half Native-American, a mechanic with her own shop, raised by werewolves, a shapeshifter, gutsy, and she also has a big heart. If she weren't so fictional, I'd have a crush on her.

Briggs' breezy writing style makes this story fun to read; lots of witty banter between characters and the first person narrative helps us get to know Mercy rather well. Briggs introduces many other interesting characters''werewolfs, witches, vampires and other "fae"''even though the book isn't that long. Each character, however, does have a purpose. All the male werewolfs happen to be hunks in their human form, but I guess this is to give our protagonist some potential romantic distraction from all the craziness surrounding her. According to the author's website, Mercy Thompson will have at least a couple more books in which she is the protagonist. Looking forward to reading them.

How fun! I REALLY enjoyed this start to a new series! The characters were all great - strongly drawn, sympathetic and believable. Besides, who doesn't love the set up for what seems like will turn out to be an intriguing love triangle? Plus the added werewolves, shifters, vampires and witches? I really had a fun time reading this and I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

Mercy Thompson is a skinwalker, a shapeshifter than can turn into a Coyote. She works as an auto-mechanic and spends a lot of time working on a VW bus for a local vampire. Her next door neighbor is a rough werewolf and pack leader. It's easy to say that Mercy's day-to-day life is quite different. Unfortuantly, when a young werewolf arrives in town, things soon turn from quite different to to downright dangerous.

Mercy is a great character. She's a strong, powerful woman, but far from a Mary Sue. The dialogue and storytelling in this book is really strong. Things fall apart a bit near the end, but it manages to be an entertaining novel.

There is something enjoyable about fantasy books that take place in modern times. In this universe the Fey have reveled themselves (before science could out them), but Werewolves and Vampires have decided to remain in hiding.

Mercy Thompson is not a werewolf, she is a coyote. Coyotes and wolves don't get along well in nature (nor in the city). But she soon finds herself in a battle to protect the werewolves pack.

I have to say, I really enjoyed this book. I finished it in 2 nights. not a great feet, except my glasses broke 2 weeks ago, and I've been wearing 3 year old glasses since then. Until this book I haven't read more than 10 pages before giving up. Now I know that it had more to do with the book than the glasses :)

Patricia Briggs gives us a new spin on a beleagured topic. Mercy Thompson is a shifter, but not werewolf. She is Coyote. Her ability to shift is natural born, from her Native American father. Unfortunately, he died before her mother even knew she was pregnant with Mercy. Raised by the head of all the werewolves in North America, she knows their ways, but also knows that their rules don't apply to her because she is not wolf. The fey have come forward and shown themselves to the world at large, but the Vampires and Werewolves are waiting to see how it goes.

If you like paranormal stories, this is a great read. Mercy is a strong female character and the supporting characters are well written.

Unlike a lot of paranormal fantasies, the main female character in this remains strong without being annoying. I love the fact that Mercy isn't anywhere close to all powerful nor is she trying to compensate by constantly picking fights with people. The men in the book don't start sprouting feminine qualities and while there is somewhat of a love triangle, it takes a back seat to the plot until the very last few pages. Even then, it came off as cute to me, instead of an eye roller of a Mary Sue.

All in all I like the dynamics of the werewolf packs in this book. I wasn't able to put this book down once I started it, which has become pretty rare for me. Can't wait to read the second book.

I'm just hoping the future books in this series don't turn into pure romantic fluff with a hint of plot on the side.

Cute book. I loved the character development; well done. Everything else, not so much. The main character floats along on everyone else's issues/ plots. She really doesn't do anything other then act as mediator between the different clans. Issues are glossed over and details left out. Still a good summer read and I will be reading the rest of the series. If you like this one, try out the Dresden Files. Very similar but with a little more action!

I am so happy that a fellow Charlaine Harris fan referred me to Moon Called. She told me that if I liked Harris' plucky character Sookie Stackhouse, that I'd love Patricia Briggs' heroine, Mercedes Thompson. She was right -- I'm hooked! This is the most addictive book I've read so far in 2009.

Moon Called introduces a world of werewolves, vampires and fae that is familiar from other books, but also unique in and of itself. It follows the story of Mercy Thompson, a mechanic that just happens to also be a Walker -- a woman that can shift from human to coyote at will. She's not a werewolf, but she was raised by one, so she knows all the ins and outs of pack life.

Mercy is in the middle of a budding love triangle between the local werewolf pack Alpha and her childhood love -- also a werewolf -- who's come back into the picture after a threatening pack war brings everyone together again.

I liked the story's plot, but I enjoyed Mercy the most. She's a great, strong female character with a wry sense of humor, and her character is very well developed. Moon Called is the first book in a series, and I already can't wait to get my hands on its sequel. Briggs planted a lot of seeds in this novel and I'm excited to see how they blossom in the coming books. [close]

Wow, after reading this book I am now a Patricia Briggs Fan I went out and purchased the rest of the books in the series & also the Alfa & Omega.

This book is a page-turner for me. The character of Mercedes "Mercy" Thompson is a delight. She's competent, brave, honorable and lets her mouth get her in trouble more often than it should. The diverse supernatural world that Briggs has populated is wonderful both in terms of the variety (there's gremlins, vampires, skin-walkers, werewolves and Faes plus a whole lot more)

The supporting cast in the book are very well fleshed out with distinctive personalities and relationships to Mercy. There's certainly plenty of men in Mercy's life who have strong feelings for her, but Briggs carefully steers away from the distasteful sexual escapades.

I highly recommend this book but make sure you have the time to read this without doing what I did and sacrifice a good nights sleep...not that I regret it. :)

Mercedes AKA Mercy Thompson is a young woman / automechanic / shape shifter who was raised by a werewolf pack when her bio-mom deserted her. Since her shapeshifting comes of her bio dad's native american heritage, she'n not a werewolf and despite her ability to assume coyote form has never really fitted in.

When a young newly made werewolf stumbles into her life, her life gets complicated fast and soon she's juggling threats from werewolves, witches and vampires alike. Yet Mercy is used to looking out for herself and knows that too much meekness just makes her prey.

This novel is a good introduction to an interesting series and despite the amount of background material that must be explained, the author is adept enough to get the exposition out of the way and keep the reader interest high. The characters are engaging and the dialogue is witty enough to keep up the interest level. While the writing is good throughout, it's seldom great but the storytelling makes up for that and I'm looking forward to the next installment. I enjoyed getting to know these characters and I look forward to spending more time in their world.

I like the way that the gay character is introduced and I look forward to seeing more of him in the rest of the series.

Mercy Thompson is a new entry in the tough-chick, alternate universe, preternatural Fantasy/Thriller, Urban genre. She's a skinwalker - a coyote - and inhabits a dangerous world of weres, vamps, "faes", witches and other supernaturals, managing to navigate them all.

I particularly like that this heroine is a self confident business owner, who accepts what she is. She recognizes her limitations of size and strength (against both men and wolves), and accepts that it's okay to leave the fight to others every once in a while.

Ms Briggs manages to write "light," fast-paced, easy and quick to get through books without them being dumb. Her characters give you something to hook your heart onto, something to love about them, a reason to root for them, without that feeling that you've seen their type a thousand times before.

I honestly didnt like this book at all. It was really slow and didnt really start picking up intil at least 150 pages into the book, and even then it wasnt that great. I had read Kelley Armstrong's Bitten right before i read this one, and Moon Called was pitiful compared to Bitten. I think this was just an overall lacking book. I am known at school for being the girl that passes around good books. I wont be suggesting this one. 1 out of 5

Moon Called is an urban fantasy centered around werewolves, told from the first person perspective of Mercy Thompson. Currently, supernatural creatures are being forced to reveal themselves to the unsuspecting human population because of the rise in modern science and technology. This fact is the basis for much of the underlying turmoil of the book. Mercy is a shapeshifter--a coyote. Unlike the werewolves she is not bound in any way to the moon, or to the stringent pack system that organizes them. Mercy is in fact fiercely independent, owning and running her own mechanic shop for German vehicles. Despite her seemingly low status, she's in a unique position of knowing a variety of supernatural creatures and being deeply involved in their lives. An abused teenage werewolf shows up in her shop looking for work, and Mercy becomes entangled in the fights and politics of the local werewolf pack. Mercy fights along side them in a battle for power and justice.

This book had a lot of positive points. Mercy is a fairly appealing protagonist. She's tough and independent, but still shows emotion and compassion. I wish she'd developed more but I understand there's more books in the series for that. The cast of secondary characters were each interesting in their own right, but also helped to move the plot forward. Briggs did a good job outlining the pack hierarchy and rules in a way that made sense, while managing not to get bogged down with politics. The world building was similarly well done. The plot was interesting enough to keep me reading, even if it was slow in a few places. I liked that there was a mystery to be solved and a few surprise twists. I also appreciated the touches of humor that kept it from getting too dark.

My main criticism is that the characters are pretty underdeveloped. As mentioned, I liked them all very much, however I would expect that having encountered hardship they would be impacted or changed in some way.

This is the type of book that leaves you wanting to read the next one in the series immediately. It's that good. Everything is wrapped up well, but there's just enough questions left unanswered to keep you curious. Excellent book.

This Mercy Thompson series actually overlaps the other wold Omega series, with wonderful development of characters and interesting stories. A wonderful read for were-wolf tale fans, and vampires are evil greasy things.

I started reading this series at Book 3 I think. I have read almost all of them now and finally got a copy of Book 1~! This is a great series! I love the easy to read writing style of Patricia Briggs, the entertaining story, and the story will make me laugh and cry.... and always leave me ready to read another book by Ms Briggs.
Moon Called answered SO MANY questions I had about the series. Well Written and both funny and intense.....Mercy Thompson is the Woman we would all like to reach down inside ourselves and find! She's tough, hardworking, loves what she does, compassionate and more... and when the tough are upset, what do they do??? They Bake Cookies!!!! To learn more you will just have to read the book!

It was light and easy read, without being predictable. The author has left room for character development and variety in fantasy/paranormal characters. In the first, you are introduced to her unusual heritage, enabling her to transform into a coyote. Her upbringing with werewolves is showcased. And her conflicting relationship with a neighbor alpha male gives hope that a romance may develop.

I was searching my library shelves for a new series to read when a friend spied me & recommended Patricia Briggs. Am I so glad she did!

This book sucked me in from the start!

I love mercy and her smart ass ways. She one tough cookie and really likeable. Her life is full of trouble; some from her and some from others getting here into it.

The other major characters in the book have such great chemistry with Mercy....especially Adam & Samuel. I remember when reading this that I wonder where the author is going to take those relationships.

*highly recommended*

This is the first book I've read by this author. I'm a big Kelley Armstrong and Laurell K. Hamilton fan so I was hoping for a little more from this author based on the reviews. I really couldn't get into this book. I found it boring and slow paced. The story picked up toward the end, but I found myself skipping ahead every few pages just to get through it. I prefer a stronger female lead and more "blood and guts" in the paranormals I read.

If you like Kim Harrison, Kelly Armstrong or Charlaine Harris you will love this book. If you are a huge fan of Laurel K. Hamilton's Anita "everyone-fancies-me-and-only-I-can-save-the-world" Blake books, then you probably wont like this author.

First I have read by this author. Pretty good. Didn't think I would like the books about werewolves but this was good. I definitely plan on reading the next book in this series.

A few disappointments but still a fun read. The writing and dialogue are superior to other books from the same genre. SPOILER WARNING: Wish the author had expounded more on the hidden talents of heroin as well as bringing a resolution to the romantic relationship. But perhaps that leaves the book open to a sequel?

Pretty good. I liked the set up of the different types of characters (werewolves, vampires, fae, etc). It was nice to see less of the romance angle in this book and that it was left a little unresolved.

Mercy Thompson's sexy neighbor is a werewolf and she's working on a VW bus owned by a vampire. But then, Mercy Thompson is not exactly normal herself -- she's a shape-shifter.

I enjoyed this book immensly!! I hope someone else does too....Mercy is tough and cautious and full of spunk!!!

I enjoyed this book, not one of the best I’ve ever read like the previous reviewers already stated, but I see it as a good start to a new series, and by the end, I was curious to see what would happen between Mercy and Adam, or Mercy and Samuel.

The book strays a bit from what I’ve come to expect with regards to werewolves and vampires, and even introduces a new type of paranormal called a “walker” which Mercy is, she can shapeshift into a coyote, a gift from her Native American ancestry. Though she’s often shunned by the werewolves, Mercy discovers that in many ways she’s just as capable and able as the fuller-bodied wolves, and is even immune to many forms of witch and vampire magic and thralls that the werewolves don’t have. She’s tough and doesn’t let people push her around so I really liked her character for that reason alone, particularly since I’ve previously read some books where the main character is more of a wishy washy female who can’t seem to think for herself. She’s no Anita Blake, and I’d be hard pressed to put anyone in the same category as Anita, but I found her a strong and interesting character nonetheless.

The first quarter of the book was okay. Mercy has a lot of funny quips but overall the book is pretty stagnant. No real character development and nothing really happens. I'm pretty sure I skimmed the last 80 pages. I can't name any of the characters other than Mercy or tell you anything that actually happened in the story it was just that boring. The diversity felt more like it was there for diversity bingo than actual characters.

Don't judge this book by its cover!!! I don't know what is up with the cover art on this series, but it is quite misleading. These books are great and Mercy Thompson is a fantastic heroine.

I wish I could remember what drew me to pick up this book. The cover I guess. Perhaps seeing the newest release on the new release shelf. Regardless once I read the back cover I had to have it. After reading this book I was hooked on the series. My dad who also reads the genre does not like this series as much as I do. I think its fantastic though. I like it as much as Sookie Stackhouse but in it's own way. Don't compare it with the previous mentioned book. Love it for its own merits.

Mercedes Thompson is a walker, a descendant of Native Americans and has the ability to turn into a coyote and detect magic and block it. She gets drawn into a fight with werewolves because of her neighbor. Turns out she helps out a lot and practically saves the day, and only sustains mild injuries.

This book was so much like the first couple of Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake books, it has the same tone and sort of the same concept, but different...lets just hope she doesn't turn the series into nothing more than completely gratuitous sex scenes in book form. I liked the tension between Mercy and the local werewolf alpha, Adam. I like the whole idea of the story but it felt a bit like something was missing as well, although, I can't quite place what. Mercy is a strong female lead and I liked that as well. We will see what the rest of the series has in store.

the first book Briggs wrote that was not solely fantasy. I was impressed, but i had read a lot of her other work, and was a fan already. Though i'm NOT really of fan of urban, super-natural stories, i liked her characters, especially the vampire with the VW bus. as with many of her other books, it is easy to approach and leaves you feeling good after the swift read.

Good contemporary urban fantasy reminiscent of Laurell Hamilton. It has a lot of back story, almost reads like the second or third book in a series.

I give this book 5 stars cause it really was very good, though I have to admit it started too slow, I almost put it down and posted it but I have a rule, I can't quit a book til I give it a 100 pages, at that point I was hooked and can't wait to get the next one...

OH, and I really hope she chooses Adam!!!!!

I had issues reading this series as I live in the Tri Cites. Thankfully the bookworm here informed me Mrs. Briggs does live in this area so the books are well done. And I was not an unhappy person.

Oh for all you out there yes there is a mystery machine or there was. Every once in a blue moon is rolls down the road and everyone points.

Nice opener for an urban fantasy series. Mercy is fun and interesting, and the potential for multiple plotlines is right up front - fae, werewolves, witches, vampires and all. Obvious romantic interest in the local Alpha werewolf and the previous guy will add drama for a while, I'm sure. Good fun.
