This is honestly one of the best books I've read in a long time. I could not put it down. The book covered everything from SEAL training to the actual Redwing Operation to what it was like for Marcus coming home. I especially enjoyed his perspective on the U.S. media and our politicans.

Hollywood is jealous that they did not dream this story up first. If you determine that you are going to read this book, then get ready for a wild ride. For those who have never been in the military, the bravdo expressed throughout the book may become tiresome. But to those who have served and had the privledge to know special men such as these and call them friend, it will seem like comon place. Luttrell's views of our politicians and news media are in line with my own views I had when on the line and I am sure that it will strike a common cord with most readers.

I had a hard time in the beginning. I found it easy to get lost in the story of how he visited the families of his brothers. But there is a point where the story puts you shoulder to shoulder and then wham- your stomach heaves and your heart races. After that, I couldn't put it down. I've never felt such a physical reaction from a book before. Of course reading this I knew it was a true account. That probably had something to do with it, as I generally read fiction. I told myself I was going to get in at least 1 non-fiction per year and someone passed it to me and said- this needs to be the one. Godspeed to our troops!

One of the gut wrenching accounts I've ever read of an military operation. Marcus Luttrell and all the SEALS who lost their lives that day are true hero's. And it sickens me that the entire thing could have been avoided but for the "fear" of liberal media.

When I first began this book I didn't think I was going to make it through it. The beginning gives you background on the author, the afghan people and goes into microscopic detail of what goes on in the training of a navy seal. It was interesting but I found myself bleary eyed and dazed through the enormity of their tasks--pretty much like the recruits felt during hell week. And at first I thought, this guy is really arrogant, after completing the book all I can say is his belief in his training and his loyalty to his country and the great state of Texas and family are what kept him alive. So...all that background is necessary for you to completely understand the character of the men who fought the battle on Murphy's Ridge as well as the men who attempted to rescue them. Once I was halfway through this book I had to force myself to put it down and digest what I read before going on. So much bravery. So much loss. So much pain. I've read a few books from those who've served in Iraq and they were good, but this book is phenomenal. I would recommend it to everyone. Marcus Luttrell and his SEAL buddies have my utmost respect and confidence.
My favorite quote from the book is something he and his twin brother say to each other: "From the womb to the tomb." May it be so.

Wonderful book!!! Scary what we ask our soldiers to do and then not support them. They are in a foreign country trying to fight by our rules. But very few countries fight by our rules. Thanks Marcus for an aweinspiring look at what you lived thru. I am proud of all of our soldiers defending our freedom. God bless and keep them all safe!Great book, must read.

I have to say that this is one of the best books I have ever read. The beginning of the book goes over background information of Marcus and the rest of his team. This information gave me a better understanding of the type of men who's lives were taken on that Afgan mountain. (Notice I say "taken"...some would say "gave" their life. These men did not give their lives for this country...their lives were definitely TAKEN.) This has to be the most gut wrenching story I have ever read. I absolutely felt like I was there, shoulder to shoulder, with Marcus and his team. From SEALs training to the battle in Hindu Kush. I read the book in two days. I couldn't put it down and I haven't been able to get it out of my mind since I've finished it. I highly recommend this book to every American.
I have been following the recent story of the murder of Marcus's dog he received during rehab. This man suffered the loss of his entire team, the entire rescue team and near fatal injuries himself. Now, he has lost the one other thing that meant so much to him. "DASY", his yellow lab (named for the members of his team) he received during rehab. Heartless, cowardice, low-life thugs shot and killed his dog (along with many other dogs) for the fun of it. Marcus sprang into action and chased them down (at over 100mph) and caught them! I know he is going through a tuff time right now and probably reliving the nightmare of events in Afganistan, but I hope that when the dust settles and the legal process is over he decides to write another book. He is a talented writer and DASY's story needs to be told!

Intense. Gripping. Necessary. Heart wrenching.
Not sticking to my typical genre, I was compelled to read this novel. Having no military background anywhere in my family, I have always been amazed at the personal strength any member of the "branches" has. That said, just reading what SEALs or other elite forces have to go through just to become a member of the elite is awe-inspiring, unfathomable.
Initially, I couldn't figure out where Mr. Luttrell was going but by the time you are midway through the book, you understand the importance of his background information. He also introduces you to the culture and you see the necessity of it in later accounts. He allows you to feel as if you are right there with him. I laughed at the humor, I cried at the pain, I could literally feel his emotions pouring out of the book.
This book is a necessary read for anyone who really wants to know the truth and honor behind the people who protect our freedom and who are the back bone of the country we live in. This book is not glossed over or sensationalized by the media to garner ratings. This book is a test of personal mettle, of friendship and love for something greater than us. (Finding out that Mr. Luttrell attributes his strength and life to God was just a bonus to this heart-wrenching story of courage and valor.) (Ours isn't to question why, sometimes it is acceptance and find out what we are supposed to do with what we are given.)
This book gave me further understanding to the sacrifice the "servants" of our country make. We are a country that is quick to condemn others, not wanting to look within. Reading this life account made me even more thankful for the sacrifice the FAMILIES of service men and women make. It is shameful that they are not valued as they should be and that they have to fear the backlash of their actions when they are in personal danger everyday for us.

It took me several attempts to really sit down and get started. Very moving. In the beginning, it is a little hard to follow Luttrell's constant switching topics. But, the SEAL training and actual event depiction is riveting. I wish I could remember the actual media reporting on this tragedy. My hope is that many, many people read this book and learn from it. The tragedies of war should not be second-guessed by persons not experiencing it first hand. This book also made me think about the plight of the Afghan people who do not support the Taliban--and how fortunate the American people are. For me, this was a thought-provoking and soul-searching book.

Hands down one of the best books I've ever read. Growing up in a military town I have a great appreciation for the military. But having a stepfather that was a Navy corpsman, I have a soft spot for any personnel that is Navy.
This book was a real page turner, intense, detailed, grueling, but with just the right amount of humor in some places. I will never look at a pepsi bottle the same, EVER.
Thank you Marcus Luttrell for sharing your patriotic, demanding, driven, loving and heartbreaking story with us!

Wow, what a read. Marcus gives an in depth look at his journey to become a Navy SEAL & through BUD/S and his account of what happened to he & his 3 teammates (Murph, Axe, & Danny) during Operation Redwing in 2005. A gripping, detailed, and sad story about a war that is raging on still. Dropped off in Taliban territory to capture or kill an al queda leader was the team's mission. A harrowing journey into unknown territory and a battle that killed Marcus's three teammates & later a rescue/extract helicopter full of other teammates. Last man standing, Marcus was found by Pashtun leader & taken to their village & protected. This book was up close & personal and full of honor for his fallen hero comrades and a tale of hope and perseverance. If you've seen the movie, you need to read the book.

I would give it 10 stars if the options existed. An excellent accounting of a mission gone bad and the moral
dilemma these men faced. How our government offers up ROE's (Rules of Engagement) that can't be maintained if one wishes to survive. How our country has a double standard. I never realized what it took to become a navy
seal and what these men are willing to risk for God and country. Marcus Luttrell has done a noble thing by publishing this book and honoring the lives of those men
who were killed in the mission. I found the book thought provoking, action packed, patriotic and motivational.
