I enjoyed this book enough to look for whatever else the author wrote. Perhaps what I liked so much about this story was the plot, a storyline I've never encountered before.
The setting is a summer camp a few days away from opening when all of the counselors are fired due to what the stodgy older owner considers lascivious behavior.
Dirty Dancing this is not.
New counselors are hired last minute, including one genetically disfigured young man who has been living in a Salvation Army facility. This poses a bit of a dilemma as for the first two weeks the camp hosts 100 inpatients from the local state mental hospital, where many patients are not only mentally challenged, but physically, with some disfigured.
Not only is the day to day of caring for these folks fascinating, but the whole story is just page turning with interesting characters, a bit of abuse (but not much so that it is a gimmick), a murder, commitment, and top-notch writing. And for a newer book, there is not a bit of political correctness on a single page.
