Small book. Unusually thought provoking. Life during the German seige of Leningrad when famine is widespread. A scientist in the area of food production, finds himself tested in the crucible of history,as he and his fellow scientists agree not to eat the food they are working with.

a gem of a little book - set in St. Petersburg/Leningrad during the 900-day seige

I did not enjoy this book. It was a good idea for a book, but I did not enjoy the way it was executed.

It was a quick read but it seemed vague and disjointed.

(*** possible spoiler below***)
The main character is put out there for you to hate as if nothing is redeemable about him. I did hate him for is adulterous affairs. I did not hate him for stealing food to survive, as I feel I was suppose to.

I would try another book by this author. I would recommend this book to try since it was not a huge time investment if you don't like it.

(FYI: I read this book and then "Fat Girl" by Judith Moore. The contrast was nice.)
