I loved the book! I listened to it on audiobook, so it went by much faster than sitting down & reading it. Many stories in this one book. At times, it seems drawn out but I found myself reflecting on situations that came up & moved by thoughts, actions, etc.

My least favorite of all of this author's books, and that is saying something. After this one, I have taken a vow never to spend another hour reading anything this author has written. I understand from reading articles about him that Mr. Lamb is a very nice man who has made significant charitable contributions of time and money, and I know he has a faithful following of readers, but I will never be one of them.
The real question is why I wasted my time reading this book after my experiences with his first two books. He piles tragedy on top of tragedy on top of tragedy to the point where you lose your ability to care about the characters. Consider this book: it managed to combine the Columbine shooting, Hurricane Katrina, parental neglect, closeted lesbian love, mental illness, DUI homicide, depression, alcoholism, prescription drug addiction, spousal abuse, rape, abuse by prison guards, biracial romance in the 50s, and to add icing to the cake - the fixing of the Miss Ballantine contest. It was exhausting, and ultimately, in my opinion, cheapened the suffering of real Columbine survivors.

This book was very well written and the characters were well developed. The story lines seems to jump around at times but it all comes together. This is worth a listen.

How the Columbine shooting is related to future events is very well shown. Great way to show the severity of PTSD and how it can impact a person for life. I totally did not expect the climax. After that, though, the ending was almost a letdown.
