Here For It: Or How to Save Your Soul in America by R. Eric Thomas was put on my reading radar by Annie B. Jones on the From the Front Porch podcast. I share her interest in books that explore matters of faith, and this collection of personal essays is excellent.

The essays reflect on the author's childhood, his college experiences, various aspects of his career, his personal relationships, and his faith and religion. As a gay Black man, Mr. Thomas unfortunately has many experiences of being the 'outsider' because of his skin color, sexual orientation, or both.

Mr. Thomas shares his candid thoughts with his trademark wit and a range of emotions (humor, heartbreak, outrage, snark, etc.), making his audiobook narration feel like a conversation with a very smart and funny friend.

Here For It was oddly timely to read in December since The Preacher's Wife (one of my favorite Christmas movies) is referenced throughout, and the author shares his opinions about the proper way to decorate a Christmas tree.

Mr. Thomas, thank you for sharing your heart. I'm eager to read your next book, whatever it may be.
