This book is enjoyable. Not as good as the other two though. Still a good read.

Sabrina Davidson, daughter of the magistrate and niece of the Earl of Tay, has a secure position in the society in which she lives. She gave up the chance of marriage when she took care of her dying mother for several years. Now she is hostess in her fathers home.

However, Sabrinas world starts to unravel when she learns from the Widow Bossley (a woman free with her favors) that she is about to marry Sabrinas father, Richard Davidson. In a terrible tumult, Sabrina walks about venting her anger and frustration. Eventually, she gets to an old bothy (an abandoned shelter, left unlocked) and thinks about her situation.

While there, Sabrina finds a man, Cormac Enright, who seems to be dying of fever and malnutrition. She takes him to her home, in an effort to save his life. As he gets better, he explains why he is in the area. He was to be hanged for a crime he didnt commit when a Vicar took him from his cell and helped him escape from an Edinburgh prison.

Cormac has been accused, and convicted, of killing a young woman who came to him for protection. The minister tells Cormac that he is there to help him escape and he was an emissary of Robert Davidson (who was the only witness to the crime and testified against Cormac).

Cormac was on his way to see Richard Davidson when he became gravely ill. If Sabrina had not found him and nursed him, Enright would have died. These two decide to join forces to find the real killer of the lovely singer.

These are two matched characters; Sabrina equals Cormacs intelligence, wit and clear thinking. It takes time for them to realize that they were meant to be; Sabrina sends Cormac on his way when she realizes his uncovering the truth will bring down her family.

This mystery has twists and turns to keep the reader hooked to the last page. It is a compliment to Cathy Maxwells writing skill that I couldnt put this book down even though I really dont normally like British Regency-type books. This is the third book in this series.
