Fifth Avenue Store Only Author:: Isabel Glass Fifth Avenue Store Only is a novel of today's career woman. Greta Barringer has chosen to compete in what she recognizes is still a man's world, and she has long accepted that she must be willing to use her body as well as her brains if she is to get ahead. — Greta has come a long way from St. Louis and her upper-middle-class Jewish family and sh... more »e wants to go farther. As the highly successful fashion copywriter for A. & J. Amberg, the carriage trade department store on fifth Avenue, she bears little resemblance to the frightened and insecure girl who arrived in the East to assert her independence. She has become like the world in which she live-smart, sophisticated, glamorous and hard-driving - and her days and nights now revolve around her job, a series of pleasantly casual love affairs, elegant restaurants and Long Island weekends.
Greta is a winner, and she is no more prepared to lose in the politics of the office than in the politics of the bedroom. Suddenly she finds herself confronted with two unexpected threats. One comes in the form of Jim Hanify, Amberg's capricious and wheedling Creative Director; the other, in the form of Tom Heller, a wealthy, divorced businessman whose daughter. Weezie. considers herself old enough to be a social and sexual rival to Greta.
In telling how Greta meets these threats, Isabel Glass takes the reader into the world of power-those who seek it. those who have it and those who are afraid of losing it. Here are the machinations that go on behind the chic facade of a New York department store. and her, too, are the games women must play if they want to be neither losers nor weepers. With Fifth Avenue Store Only, Ms.Glass has written a novel that marks the debut of an author who will keep her readers turning the pages for more.« less
Even though this book was written in 1974 the rules still apply today. Women who tackle the male ruled workforce today still face all the character faces in this book. It was a great read and I enjoyed it a lot.
