This is the third book in the Hometown Heroes miniseries by Marta Perry. We return to tiny Bedford Creek, PA, where Alexander Caine is trying to find a way to keep his fathers business afloat, since many of the townspeople work for him, directly or indirectly. Hes recovering from an accident and has a sweet housekeeper, Maida, who unexpectedly needs to have surgery. While Maida recuperates, her niece Paula Hansen comes to Alexs home to serve as his housekeeper/au pair.
Theres some chemistry between the two: theyd shared a kiss previously, and Alex finds himself drawn to her. However, Paula worries about appearances and fears that she wont fit into Alexs world (the trope of poor girl/rich boy). Alex is also neglecting his young son, who begins acting out and eventually does something that puts both Alex and Paula in danger. At some point in the story, I would have liked to see Alex at least try to discipline his own child.
Fans of Marta Perrys work will enjoy this book. Its a sweet, simple small-town romance.
