4.0 out of 5 stars Secrets, lies, betrayal and murder..., May 19, 2011

The opening chapters of this book will draw in any thriller lover immediately! Faith Mitchell is late to her mother's house to pick up her infant daughter, Emma. When she arrives to find a blood-stained door, a hostage situation in the bedroom, a dead man in the laundry room, and her mother missing -- the real suspense begins. The kidnapped, retired policewoman, Evelyn Mitchell, has a long and complicated history as a former head of a drug investigation unit that ended up brought down on corruption charges. Who has taken her and what do they want? What follows is a complicated and involving effort to unravel the mystery and takes the characters on a wild chase from death row at a Georgia prison to a warehouse that fronts as a cabinet factory to a hospital morgue.

This is the third novel by author Karin Slaughter that features the characters of Will Trent and Faith Mitchell - both work for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. They have connected with Sara Linton, a trauma doctor who was previously married to cop Jeffery Tolliver in the Grant County series. The two prior books, Triptych and Fractured, introduced the interesting duo of Will and Faith (he with severe dyslexia and she with a hard life past) and they met Sara when she returned to Atlanta to work in a hospital there. The complex characters have interesting and unique relationships to each other and this provides a great deal of depth to the narrative.

I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a good suspense thriller. I do think it would be best if the reader started at the beginning of the Grant County series with Blindsighted (Dr. Sara Linton) and worked his/her way up to this one in order to fully see the changes and growth that have transpired in the characters, but I do suppose it could be enjoyed as a stand alone as well.

This is an excellent book. The characters are developing in a satisfing way. What kept me from giving this book 4 stars was the ending. I found it to be totally unbelievable. But that said, I really enjoyed it and love this author.

Late picking up her infant daughter at her mother's house, Georgia Bureau of Investigations Agent Faith Mitchell is shaken by what she finds. There is a hostage situation inside the house. Her infant daughter is locked in the shed. Her mother, retired police captain Evelyn Mitchell, is missing. Faith's partner, Will Trent, and her boss, Amanda Wagner, delve into the investigation along with the Atlanta Police Department. We learn that Evelyn Mitchell once supervised a group of narcotics officers who were arrested for corruption. It is believed by some that Evelyn knew what was happening with her team and may have been part of it. As Will and Amanda piece together clues as to who took her and why Evelyn was kidnapped, Faith tries to hold her family together against outside threats.

This book started out with a bang. I found the mystery complex with lots of red herrings. But what always makes a Karin Slaughter book a winner is her characters. Both Faith and Will have had a tough past. Faith is a single mother who is trying to keep her kids out of danger. Will is dealing with issues from his days growing up in an orphanage. He is falling for Dr. Sara Linton and wants to be with her, but his past and his wife are standing in the way.

Another interesting character in this series is Amanda. Her half-truths and outright lies really make it hard for Will to figure out what is actually happening. I'm waiting for the day he tells her where to go. I have to say I love Will and Sara's developing relationship and am having a real hard time with Angie and her manipulations. I can't imagine what things she is going to do to keep Will in her life. My rating: 4.5 Stars.

Gripping, suspenseful, good twists. Excellent continuation of the Will Trent / Faith Mitchell series, including Sarah Linton (from the Grant County) series. You don't want to miss this one!

Karin Slaughter has been entertaining her fans with exciting thrillers with ten novels to her name. One of the reasons that she is so well thought of is that she describes her characters in a way that makes the reader want to know more.

Faith Mitchell shows that she's got the same problems as many parents. She has an infant being watched by her mother and must get home to pick up the child.

Her mother, Evelyn, a retired police commander, is watching Faith's four-month-old dauther, Emma. Faith has been through countless training exercises but when she sees a bloody handprint on her mother's door, she goes into another gear.

After Faith calls for backup, she senses that her mother is in danger and decides not to wait. She enters the home and finds one man deceased, then she confronts two others. There is a deadly encounter at this point that is most visual, as if the reader were watching the action taking place before them.

Will Trent is Faith's partner. Amanda Wagner is his boss and Evelyn's best friend. They lead the investigation and we learn that Evelyn was the commander of a narcotics division prior to her retirement. There was a situation within her unit and due to the legal implications, Evelyn took an early retirment.

The story deals with the loyalty Will and Amanda have for their friend Evelyn. The evidence seems to show that there may be a problem with Evelyn's background but her friends remain strong in their belief of her.

There is also an interesting subplot as Will and Dr. Sara Linton spend time together and form a romantic relationship. We also see Faith wanting to do everything that she can to save her mother and so she begins her own investigation.

The story moves along swiftly and with an inventive plot, knock out characters and a fascinating conclusion, this makes for an engrossing read.

**spoiler alert**

Outstanding!!!! I guess the old saying, "Something good comes to those who wait". Well, we waited a long time for this one......

I know everyone was crushed when Jeffrey was killed, and even though we all forgave Slaughter once her follow up book came out and we all wanted Sara to get together with Will, we still had to wait to see how Slaughter was going to play this one out. She always keeps us on the edge of our seats. I was thrilled with this book. This is another action packed thrill ride that only Slaughter can deliver. And as usual, I didn't piece it all together until the last chapter. What a ride! And I must say I was smiling like a kid when Sara and Will finally got together. Whew! Its about time. Lena does not make an appearance in this one, but Faith and Amanda are back, and Faith has gotten herself caught up in some serious family drama. And Will shows us his sense of humor (even though its his internal dialogue) that had me laughing out loud several times. There are so many players in this one, you will need to take notes to keep up. But in true Slaughter fashion, she ties all the ends together and I still got my happy ending this time. If you are just starting out with Slaughter, start at the beginning. You won't be disappointed with her books, I love every one of them, even when the ending didn't make me so happy.....

I didn't care for this one at all, I didn't even finish it--by midway I was tired of trying to keep up with so many characters and I still didn't know exactly what was going on, what was the crime or the reason or the suspects? Just bordered on boring because it just didn't get to the point quick enough for me
