Heiress Ellie Hartley's life was a mess after her three-year-old daughter died. Her husband divorced her and she had a mental breakdown. Ellie is trying to put her life back together when she meets Real Estate Mogul Martin Cresswell-Smith. Martin sweeps her off her feet. In a matter of weeks, they have eloped and Martin has moved to Australia where he is working on a huge development project. Ellie has invested in that project and hopes to make it a big success. But when she arrives in Australia a few weeks behind him, she finds that her husband has changed. Martin is no longer the caring, fun-loving guy she met in Canada. In a matter of days, Martin has been murdered, and the police are looking at Ellis as their number one suspect. Ellie has no memory of the night he died; but isn't unhappy that he is gone.
This story is told in a couple different alternating timelines. First Martin's body is discovered by the police and we follow their investigation. Then we backtrack to Ellie's first meeting with Martin and their whirlwind relationship. Finally, we are also following the murder trial in the present day. I made a big assumption at the beginning of the book which threw off my enjoyment of the story. I really didn't like either Ellie or Martin and I have a hard time reading about characters that I don't like. Near the end of the book there is a big twist which changed my outlook on the whole book. I certainly didn't see it coming. Therefore, it pulled my rating up a couple of point. My rating: 4 Stars.
