The Dark Frigate seemed a little slow in places, but turned out to be okay. It is set in the 17th century London where Philip Marsham flees after a terrible accident and signs on with the Rose of Devon, a dark frigate bound for Newfoundland. During the voyage, the frigate is seized by pirates and Philip is forced to join them.

It won the Newbery Medal award.
