This is another excellent study of women soldiers during the Civil War, as well as some from the Revolutionary War. The author relates the experiences of a number of women, many of whom were also covered in another book---They Fought Like Demons---but in more detail.

The last chapter is devoted to a discussion on why the many women risked the experience of soldering, and decides you can't fit each one into a convenient slot, but that many had several different reasons. One common theme was the limited opportunities of women during this period of American history for earning an income and experiencing life at its fullest.
