I had the privilege of being able to read an uncorrected proof (for work) and this book single-handedly got me on a mystery/thriller kick. It's amazing. Fast paced, easy read, no "filler" (descriptions of hillsides, non-action scenes that don't move the plot forward).
I believe this is #2 in a series but reading the first book is not required, one doesn't miss anything in the storyline (I didn't read the first yet - it's now on my wish list).
